When you are standing in the record-breaking heat of summer, looking for a spot of shade at an arts festival, but finding mostly asphalt and sunshine, remind yourself …

Perpetual Penguins

Adding and subtracting, combining and reducing, twisting and turning … Yep, art’s like that. We like M.C. Escher and his drawings of fantastic stairways where one climbs endlessly.

We like ice storms.

And we like penguins.

So what if you took penguins+icestorm+escher staircase and made … Perpetual Penguins.

Hey, nobody’s going to stop us, right?

Perpetual Penguins ice storm

The staircase is made of clear acrylic, with painstaking effort to cut each tiny stair to the perfect size and shape. When shaken, the globe bursts with the light of the Aurora Borealis reflected in the shimmering, dancing snow. And the penguins keep marching: up, down, sideways in the endless twilight. Perpetual penguins.

THINGS are looking up

Maybe the best part of this snowstorm design is that the title came long after the visual design.

And it was the kind of perfect you-gotta-love-it grin for me, lover of puns and multiple interpretations. A cliche turned on its ear.

I hadThings Are Looking Up custom snow globe, Camryn Forrest Designs 2014 the idea of a person looking down a microscope, and wondered, “what would happen if you saw an eye looking back at you?”

The scale became grander, a two-tiered snow globe, with a tiny man peering into a downwards telescope.

Below, the rolling green mounds come into focus: Wait. There’s a bright crop of green eyes staring back.

And the “what if?”of the double snow globe became its own double meaning.

Because things ARE looking up.

Or if you prefer, THINGS are looking up.

A Very Good Year

Experimenting with a very fine
and very dense crushed glitter,
it struck me how rich and red
the liquid was when shaken:
almost opaque,
yet dancing
with a
reflected sparkle.
In the language of grapes:
depth of flavor and aroma;
it is rich, full-bodied and intense.
