A Word with Modern Makers

A while back, the Modern Makers Project at Webster University contacted us about how we found ourselves snow globe artists.
Here is the result. http://www.modernmakersproject.com/Camryn-Forrest-Lewis-of-Camryn-Forrest-Designs/

(Air) Ship Happens

We’ve been making steampunk airships incased in snow sparkle globes for quite a few years, and like to think we’ve gotten better over time. Experience is an excellent teacher, although the tuition can be high.

More recent airships …

One question we get asked at shows is: can you make a smaller blimp? The large airships are usually in a glass globe with a diameter of about five inches. But we also have our tiny globes that measure just over two inches across. There was NO way to get an airship into a globe with an opening that small.

Until we happened upon a vintage necklace at a thrift shop and thought: those beads sure look like a zeppelin.  Did it take way too long to make this tiny ship with its tiny rigging of single golden threads? Of course it does, but you know, ship happens.

And we think it’s just as cute as its big sister ships.

Coming Home to Sky Island City

Imagine a city in the sky, a floating island of bustling industry. Airships carry passengers and supplies from land to land, from cloud to cloud. The island is a blink in the eye of the universe; it is the entire world for those who live there.

Does the world come to visit the Sky Island City, or does the city ride the movement of the sky, and venture far and wide to visit the world?

See “Sky Island City” and other custom snow globes a the steampunk exhibition “Odd Beauty” at the Southampton Arts Center, Southampton New York, September 23 through November 12, 2017.  The Odd Beauty Exhibition is curated by artist/author Art Donovan.
“Sky Island City”, one of a  kind sparkle snow globe with two “inhabited” clay islands, floating gently in the clouds, with tiny airships, and sky full of possibilities. When shaken, the liquid sky fills with gentle copper and green glitter dust. Weathered clay cliffs wrap the globe base. To Hell and Back

For many people, the next road trip is only an excuse to secure another snow globe for the ever-expanding collection.

Prompted by the fascinating request to “Go to hell, and bring me back a snow globe,” we did just that.

A snow globe holding a hand, holding a snow globe which is holding a hand. It’s like M.C. Escher and Stephen King joined forces on the set of the Matrix. Okay, that’s a stretch, but a tiny real snow globe in the hand inside a small snow globe in another hand, inside a snow globe in YOUR hand … see what we did there?  Snow globe times infinity.

Journey to the Stars

Who hasn’t wished for the courage and opportunity to take the first wild step into the unknown?

“Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.”

Wish Upon a Star

When you wish upon a star,

makes no difference who you are,

anything your heart desires,

will come to you.
